Upcoming Events

February 8, 2011

The wheels are really in motion for our February 26th book giveaway in Michigan. We have at least a dozen teachers coming and potentially more as the week progresses. I’m really thrilled. If you would have asked me that we would be in a position, one year into this, to be able to coordinate such an event remotely with the help of a new partner, I would have laughed. That’s something that’s off in the distance right? But no, we were blessed with meeting the wonderful people at Mission Based Books and they have been so generous to open their doors for a day and help provide books for Court’s Kids partner schools in their area. If you are in the Ann Arbor area and interested in participating, please email us at courtskids@gmail.com

Books being sorted for our partner programs

The weekend before our book giveaway in Michigan we’re holding a book sort here in Portland. Our friends at Schoolhouse Supplies have again donated lots of books to our program. Along with an amazing volunteer group consisting of board members, interns, a friend from our partner the Shadow Project, family members (Bryan counts as he’s watching Colin so Mommy can work), and PTA members from partner schools we will sort through boxes and boxes of books. During our sorting event in August “The Big Sort” we prepped and packed around 3,000 books…I wonder if we can top that? We’re on the verge of another discovery so to speak, can we top our last sorting event?

All this on Jules Verne’s 183rd birthday, the source of inspiration for countless explorers.  We’re on a voyage of discovery ourselves, as we explore a new world of providing books to children with special needs.

Little by little,

Kiki

“We are of the opinion that instead of letting books grow mouldy behind an iron grating, far from the vulgar gaze, it is better to let them wear out by being read.”
— Jules Verne (A Journey to the Center of the Earth)
