Superheros and Literacy

May 10, 2010

With the new Iron Man movie out, we’re sure many students are excited about superheroes lately. We noticed one new effort that tries to capitalize on that through comic books. Reading With Pictures is led by Josh Elder, a cartoonist who worked on such big names as Superman and Batman. He views comic books as “scholastic secret weapons,” a way to introduce stories and the relationship of words on a page with actions in an approachable and engaging way. The effort strives to bring artists together with professional educators to refine comic books into the most effective tools possible. It’s a neat effort and we encourage you to check them out.

Classrooms are certainly an appropriate setting for comic books, the heroes they portray are not unlike the super-educators Court’s Kids has been able to work with everyday.
