Tomorrow is the 2 month anniversary of our sister Courtney’s passing and I thought maybe this might be a good time to let you all in on what we’ve started working on recently. Jane had a great idea soon after we got back from Dallas that we should think about starting some sort of foundation in Courtney’s honor. Well after thinking about it a lot I started to slowly chip away at making it more of a reality. As you may or may not know, Courtney had been working on getting her degree in special education and had a love for helping children with special needs.

I am presenting you with the proposal. I have been working on for an organization whose focus and mission is to provide special education programs with books and materials. The name of the organization will be, “Court’s Kids”. I’ve gotten some initial advice and coaching from my boss/friend who has worked in this area before. He is willing to partner with us as our company has a great source for children’s books, possibly 50,000 a month that really need to get distributed somewhere. Our organization would source donations to pay for the shipping of these books to schools and programs across the Northwest (to start).

I am in the process of filling out the paperwork for 501(c)(3) status as well as the articles of incorporation for the State of Oregon. What I am hoping to accomplish with this email is to let you know about the project and what resources we will need to get started. If you are interested in being involved let me know or, if you know of someone in your network who would like to participate please pass this email along to them. Obviously as we are just in the beginning stages we will not have funds to pay for any of these resources so all would be donated time.
Here is a list of resources we will need:
  • Web Design/Development
  • Logo Design
  • Accounting/Budgeting advice, review
  • Legal Advice (we have “in-house counsel” with Dad but do we know anyone with experience in the nonprofit area?)
  • Record/note taking/etc
  • Board Members
I want this to be a real working board so if you are unable to commit much time to this but still want to help, that is okay and we can find other areas for you to contribute. As a board member you will be asked to do two main things, 1.) commit to a conference call once a month where we will discuss the progress of the organization and ask for help with different projects and 2.) periodically reach out to your network for involvement and donations, you will be provided with email copy that you can just cut and paste to send out to whomever you choose.
Thank you for taking a look at this and for considering becoming involved. This is something we know Courtney would have loved to have been a part of and would have loved building even more. We all move through the healing process in our own way and for me this has been so great, I feel like I’m getting to spend a little time with her every day.
